They say first impressions are lasting ones and mine for this place is no exception. You need to be switched-on and connected to figure out how to get a seat. There was no hostess to greet you, only a tablet. If you didn't know you had to enter your name you could be waiting for a very long time before some stranger, also standing in line, takes pity on you and shows you how to sign up. All a bit too impersonal for my tastes. The food wasn't anything memorable to speak of, just okay in my opinion. The portion sizes for the nigiri were a bit on the small side, although the fish tasted very fresh. The service was also somewhat lacking. Besides the wait to be seated I waited for the server to come back after the food was finished to see if I was satisfied or needed anything else and had to wait for the check. They were busy at the time so maybe that could account for it as it does seem to be a popular place and the young crowd.

One of my favorite sushi spots in city. Open late and DJ. Very good sushi and service.

This one was 2m walk from my hotel and open late. The price for this cellar sushi for one was $62.5, before tip. A price tag higher than expected or appropriate for the settings and the dishes. The food was tasty but nothing exceptional, seem to me a proper sushi chef is not present... I had salmon, yellowtail, tuna and eel negiri, soup and a roll - for that price. They get you by surprise with "market price" on the tuna and some other I didn't order, and charge almost $12 for that. You find out about it at check, when it's too late since the fish swims in your belly. Good funky has some merits but at that price I would go more traditional.

Great energy with authentic sushi. The food comes in small quantities and you continue to order small plates to try a variety of food. I would advise getting there sooner than later as there is always a line out of the door. Without a recommendation, I would have walked by and mistaken the bouncer outside for a night club, so it’s a great idea to map it, so you don’t miss it.

Some of the best sushi I’ve ever had! Great for a date night or just a go-to sushi restaurant. I really love the face that it’s a “late-night” place as well. Great and energetic atmosphere! The perfect dinner spot to get the night started!

We were visiting from out of town and we loved this place. The bartender gave us a number of sushi suggestions based on what kind of fish we told him we liked and everything was great. He also tweaked our drink orders (of course, with our permission) to enhance the quality of the meal. At the end of the meal we were all stuffed, but he talked us into the cookie dough roll, which was the best dessert I have ever tried. Strongly suggest this restaurant.

Amazing fresh sushi, great music. Only reason docked one star is the 40 min wait from ordering to food and 20 min wait to be seated. Worth a visit while in San fran if yoh love sushi.

Food is great! Unfortunately the service is lacking and rude. There are also some very bad seating places and they don't care if you eat while smelling piss.If you have a big group drinking alcohol and spending a lot and you get there at a good time, you might have decent service and a good time. Other than that, it's touch and go. After being here almost 10 times, I have more bad memories than good regarding the place. Food is still amazing though.

Was visiting SF for the first time and wanted to grab some fresh sushi. Decided to check out this place since it was super close to the hotel I was staying at. This place was amazing! It’s in the basement so it’s super quaint and cozy. The sushi though was to die for! If you’re in the market for affordable sushi in the Bay Area, you must check this place out.

If you've been to actually good japanese restaurants, then don't go here. Fish quality is not that good based from their nigiri plate. Sushi rolls have too much rice.

Great vibe. Love the DJ. The thing is that the sushi is just ok at best. Their spicy tuna roll was pretty pricy but ultimately was just tuna chunks with cucumber and mint leaves? I’m very confused. Paid 10.80 for nigiri hamachi toro from “japan” and it just tasted like regular yellowtail. Figured the sushi game would be strong in SFO but as someone who worked in a sushi restaurant in AZ and NC, this was disappointing to say the least.

Food was excellent, but the service was not good. Had to wait a long time to see a waiter after we sat down, and then had to wait a really long time to get our check and then get our card back after we paid. But the food was excellent. It's what made me rate this place 4 stars instead of 3.

The atmosphere is friendly and energetic. A great find! Fresh food at a very reasonable price. I would give it a five, but the majority of the rolls, although interesting and no doubt tasty, were with cooked rather than raw ingredients. Otherwise the staff is welcoming, upbeat, and efficient.

Good food but very bad service, the host was very rude and she push us to pay the full tip amount. If the service is not good, we shouldn’t pay the tip.

This place is my number one place. Of all restaurants I know I prefere it most. I always suggests to my friends to go to this restaurant. Whenever I I need a superb meal, this place comes immediately to my head. fresh and all kinds of food and a rich cuisine.professional staff, and nice vibes. In addition to that, the tariff is decent. I recommend this place with no hesitation.

Good sushi/nigiri/sashimi options, good food, good vibe. Bad service: it took a long time to order food, the servers repeatedly forgot what was ordered, had to remind them multiple times. Very long lines: 1.5 hours on Saturday 6pm

Excellent food with an interesting atmosphere. Quality post-bar sushi spot (only because of the late hours and live DJ). Reserve ahead of time on Yelp because it can be a bit of a wait if you walk in and add to the waitlist.

This is one of the best restaurants I visited in SF. There was a line to get it, but it's worth it. My sushi was simple but very fresh, and the absolute best tempura shrimp—not exaggerated. The atmosphere is rather loud with club music, which was kind of odd at first, but I ended up looking it quite a bit. My servers were nice, and above all, fast with everything. I sat at the bar and had fun watching the two chefs make food for the whole restaurant. Pro tip: try the ice cream mochi...so yummy.

Small, noisy, Izakaya, with a small selection of japanese pub grub.I had the chirashi, which had deliciously fresh fish and a nicely seasoned rice. The portion on the small side though.

With the live DJ and the wait on the stairs sake-drinking ambience, you might think this was more about experience than the fish, but the sushi is the real deal. While the food can come out slowly when the place is slammed, you’re not here for a rushed dinner (not the right place). The staff always stays cool and let the fun of a very different sushi night wash over you. You will eat well and be happy.

4,5 stars so you would think it’s good. Unfortunately the food is really really mediocre at most. Cold edamame and the squid was really dry. Also they serve fake crab and real crab, which is 3 times the price of what’s said. They have ‘market prices’ with some food which is triple the price of the other sushi but they don’t tell you. When we told the manager, they didn’t care as this was “our responsibility to check” and paid 80$ for food which was worth 35$ Do not recommend.

DELICIOUS! When the entire staff cheers as every guest arrives you know you picked the right place! We got there about 15 minutes before 6pm and people were already lined up. The prices are at lot cheaper than I thought it would be for its popularity. The food was so tasty the staff again very friendly and the service was fast and attentive! I highly recommend a sushi night here! It's a good deal $$ out of $$$$ on the wallet! Some of the more popular dishes can be a tad more expensive but we ordered a good amount of food and our bill only came to $27.25 per person including drinks...Wow right!?

I read a great review of Ryoko's and was excited to try it during a recent visit to SF. The place was packed - a good sign. Unfortunately, I was very disappointed. The sushi was of very average quality. We ordered a couple of the deep fried selections and found the coating very thick and heavy, unlike what we are accustomed to in most sushi establishments. Every one of our selections was without any presentation - the food just slapped on the plate. The most significant difference - the haphazard and unkempt way in which the sushi chefs stored the fish. Japanese restaurants are known for the clean and meticulous manner in which fish is stored. Had I noticed this when I entered the restaurant I would have quickly turned around. Overall, a very disappointing meal.

Suggested at our hotel the sushi dinner was promising to be one of the beast in San Francisco. In the heart of the city, we were surprised with such in underground place. Very packed and without ceremony, and despite the huge line we only waited a bit to get seated. Just the time for a beer. The wine list is not fantastic but the sushi amazing. Traditional way with fresh fish and very tasty. Deserved the wait. At the end we spent more than expected but what else in San Francisco?

Questions & Answers

Yes, but the sushi is some of the freshest in the city and is best experienced eaten in. Although, my first time eating here, I got takeout myself. It wasn't eaten until about 45 minutes after I got it, and surprisingly, it was still better than all of the fresh sushi that I had ever experienced up until that point. It sold me, and made me a lifelong patron from that point on. I have been eating here ever since '98. It's my "Cheers", everybody knows my name.
